Wilderness
"Know how to tramp and you know how to live," insisted Stephen Graham in his classic 1926 book, The Gentle Art of Tramping. "Know how to meet your fellow wanderer, how to be passive to the beauty of nature and how to be active to its wilderness and its rigor. Tramping brings one to reality."

An adventure on foot offers an irresistible combination: the chance to take in spectacular outdoor scenery, and get some exercise and fresh air in the process. Hiking, today, mostly refers to a walk between inns or huts, with hikers carrying only light packs or none at all. Treks, a wilderness adventure of a longer and more challenging variety than hikes, are now the most popular form of wilderness travel; porters or pack animals carry the expedition's baggage and supplies, leaving trekkers free to enjoy the journey. Independent hikers usually prefer backpacking, carrying on their backs everything they need to make themselves self-sufficient in the wilderness.
